Hitting the Reset Button

There was a period in my life when majority of my time was either spent in the studio, on the road or on stage. In other words I was mentally and physically exhausted. I’m not complaining but I was as tired of saying, “I can’t, I have rehearsal” just as much as my family and friends were sick of hearing it. One of my mentors always said, “Dancers live a lonely life.” There is a degree of truth in her statement.

Many dancers/artists feel misunderstood in relationships (of all kinds) due to our perseverance. Sacrifice becomes second nature to many of us and only other dancers/artists understand. It took years for me to consider my needs in the dance field. The need to regroup and hit the reset button, before wearing myself out; the need to enjoy moments outside of dance; the need and wisdom to say no to certain projects or people

The beauty of life is that we constantly have the opportunity to change it. We always have the power to recreate it. We can change our thoughts, remember how to live instead of planning each moment, forgive the past, be present for the now, slow down the speed, and push the reset button on a day that has escaped us.

I use to think that I had to go out of town to reset (although it is delightful when it’s possible). I would literally wait for the signs of being burned out were revealed before doing anything about it. Now, there are simple things I do that allow me to reset and focus on my goals stress free. A few can be found in 3 Steps to Make a Bad Day Good:

Reset

Drop It

Breathe

Remember, in order to do the things we set out to do, we must take care of ourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually.
